Oceans - David Doubilet at Villa Bardini

Exhibitions

Underwater photography comes to Florence with Oceani, the Italian debut of David Doubilet (New York, 1946), one of the world's most renowned nature photographers, at Villa Bardini from 21 October 2025 to 12 April 2026.

Doubilet, who has been collaborating with National Geographic since 1971 and is still active today at the age of 79, has explored the Earth's oceans for over half a century, becoming an international reference point in the field of underwater photography. His photographs combine aesthetics, science and storytelling, thanks in part to his invention of the over/under technique, which involves simultaneous shooting above and below the water's surface.

The exhibition is promoted by Fondazione CR Firenze and Gallerie d’Italia - Intesa Sanpaolo, in collaboration with National Geographic.

Oceans- David Doubilet at Villa Bardini

Exhibitions

Photographer Doubilet has always been inspired by Jacques-Yves Cousteau, photographer and documentary filmmaker of the sea.
Doubilet, together with his wife Jennifer Hayes, a marine biologist and underwater photographer herself, has observed all aspects of ocean flora and fauna.

The exhibition also provides an opportunity to reflect on how these are changing due to human intervention, in terms of uncontrolled fishing and pollution.
