The sports’ district

Sport & FreeTime

In Florence, the go-to district for sports lovers is Campo di Marte, the area spreading from the railway to the foot of Fiesole’s hill.

The area was firstly used in the 19th century by the Tuscan army for training and parades. At the beginning of the 20th century it started establishing its own identity when it was finally built-on and populated.

The district’s vocation for sports concretised after the 1930s when the Football Stadium Artemio Franchi was built. Many sports facilities were then erected in close proximity: just underneath the Stadium there’s a 25mt swimming pool, across from it stands the Mandela Forum sports hall (venue for basket, skating and volleyball competitions, as well as cinema arena during summer). Not far we find the Costoli swimming pool: the biggest of the city, with an olympic-sized pool and diving platforms.

Behind the Stadium there’s also a skate park, and across from it a rugby field, “house” of Firenze Rugby 1931.

Furthermore, you just need to go around the block to reach Luigi Ridolfi Athletic Stadium, while the baseball and softball field is just behind the football Stadium.

The last addition to the sports district was Costolina, another swimming pool (25mt).

Stadio Comunale Artemio Franchi

The Franchi stadium was built between 1930 and 1932 based on a project by engineer Pier Luigi Nervi in the area of Campo di Marte. This Italian rationalist-style stadium shows some structural features which are very innovative for that time, such as the projecting roof without supports and the helical stairs. Commissioned to a company from Turin, the grass cover immediately turned out to be of excellent quality, thanks to its perfectly drained pitch. Over the years, the stadium has undergone several changes with works carried out especially for Italy 1990. Its capacity is 47,000 people. The football ground hosts the ACF Fiorentina matches.

Nelson Mandela Forum

The Mandela Forum is a place for concerts, shows, plays, of all different kind and with the more spectacular staging. Moreover, this kind of activities are the most attractive for the public and, paradoxically, are the more neglected when this kind of structures are originally conceived and planned, especially the less recent ones. Mandela Forum also hosts political and religious meetings, cult events, expositions of all kind, competitions, conventions, in a word all the activities that can enrich the cultural heritage of mankind.
