Michelangelo Towards Myth: Restoration Sheds New Light on Tiberio Titi

Exhibitions

From 1 April to 30 September 2026, the Fondazione Casa Buonarroti will open its doors to Michelangelo Towards Myth: Restoration Sheds New Light on Tiberio Titi, an exhibition celebrating one of the most important paintings in the Buonarroti Gallery, recently restored and returned to public view.

At the heart of the exhibition is Tiberio Titi’s The Placement of Michelangelo’s Bust on the Tomb at Santa Croce (1618–1620), portraying the bust of Michelangelo Buonarroti as it appeared in the Basilica of Santa Croce in 1574. This work is a key piece in the Gallery’s historic commemorative programme.

Through archival materials, video presentations, and insights from the restoration process, the exhibition sheds fresh light on the painting and its context, closely tied to Michelangelo Buonarroti the Younger, while highlighting the museum house’s vital role in preserving the legacy of Michelangelo.

Michelangelo Towards Myth: Restoration Sheds New Light on Tiberio Titi

Exhibitions

The restoration of The Placement of Michelangelo’s Bust on the Tomb at Santa Croce, which had been displayed on the ceiling for over four centuries, has brought back the painting’s vibrant colours. Diagnostic studies have also revealed Tiberio Titi’s technique, marked by strong contrasts of light and shadow and evocative of Caravaggesque influences.
