Un ballo in maschera - Teatro Maggio Musicale Fiorentino

Classical music, opera and ballet

In 1857, Verdi was called on to write an opera for the San Carlo Theatre in Naples; the lack of time available forced him to fall back on a libretto by Scribe, Le bal masqué, but the on-stage murder of a monarch would not pass unnoticed by the Neapolitan censors, who in fact imposed numerous cuts and modifications but the writer didn't accept. The opera was staged at the Apollo Theatre in Rome, where it was performed, for the very first time, on 17 February 1859.

Performances will take place in the Main Hall of the Teatro del Maggio Musicale from May 12 to 24, 2026.

Conductor: Emmanuel Tjeknavorian. Chorus Master: Lorenzo Fratini.
Director: Valentina Carrasco. Set Design: Andrea Belli. Costume Design: Silvia Aymonino.
