Mendelssohn - Sinfonia n. 2 at the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino
Classical music, opera and ballet
On 21 November 2026 at 6:00 pm at the Teatro del Maggio Musicale Fiorentino in Florence, the concert Mendelssohn – Symphony No. 2 will be performed, conducted by Daniele Gatti, with the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino Orchestra and Chorus, under the direction of chorus master Lorenzo Fratini.
At the heart of the programme is Felix Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 2 in B-flat major, Op. 52, “Lobgesang” (Song of Praise), a large-scale work that combines the symphonic tradition with choral and vocal music. Written for orchestra, chorus and soloists, the composition alternates moments of great solemnity with more intimate and lyrical passages, creating a rich musical journey filled with spiritual and celebratory moods. The soloists will include sopranos Rosalia Cid and Giulia Alletto, and tenor Yijie Shi.
The concert is part of the Maggio Musicale Fiorentino’s Mendelssohn cycle, conducted by Daniele Gatti, which presents the composer’s symphonies alongside his oratorio Elias. Lobgesang opens this cycle, offering audiences the opportunity to discover the richness and spiritual depth of Mendelssohn’s symphonic and choral writing.
