"Beyond the Renaissance" at Palazzo Medici Riccardi

Through January 5, Palazzo Medici Riccardi is hosting the exhibition "Oltre il Rinascimento. Tra Dürer e il Parmigianino" of 150 masterpieces of European Mannerist printmaking.

The exhibition features a selection of engravings by great masters: Antonio del Pollaiolo, Mantegna, Parmigianino, artists of the Fontainebleau School, Cranach the Elder, Beccafumi, Golztius, and Dürer. Among Dürer’s works on display is his famous *Rhinoceros*; the animal depicted in the woodcut—which, incidentally, was gifted to Pope Leo X—was the first rhinoceros seen in Europe since ancient times.

The works come from the Budapest Museum of Fine Arts and, above all, from the personal collection of the great German artist Georg Baselitz, who recently died; and whose solo exhibition at the Museo Novecento is open to the public through September 13. Even shortly before his death, the artist wished to share these gems from his collection with the public (“borderline cases in art, where established ground becomes uncertain and the classical vision disintegrates”), exhibiting them in Florence, a city he loved and where he had lived for many years.
