Wax Upon a Time. Sculptures from the Medici collections

Exhibitions

From December 16, 2025, to April 12, 2026, the recently inaugurated rooms of the Uffizi Gallery will host a major exhibition dedicated to the Florentine collections of wax art from the 16th and 17th centuries.

Wax has long been one of artists’ favorite materials, thanks to its ductility and the remarkable realism it allows. Renaissance and Baroque sculptors, in particular, were able to turn it into living substance, capable of reproducing reproduce faces, gestures and bodies with striking naturalness.
These creations were not only intended for shrines and popular devotion, but also for the collections of European Courts, where they stood out for their craftmanship and extraordinary realism.

The exhibition collects artworks once displayed at the Tribuna degli Uffizi and at Palazzo Pitti, later removed from the collections in the late 18th century. Centuries later, they return to the museum, ffering the public the chance to admire one of the most surprising art forms of the past.

More than 90 works — including wax sculptures, paintings, and precious objects — illustrate the refined art of wax modeling between Renaissance and Baroque, featuring masterpieces by Zumbo, Giulio de'Grazia and Orsino Benintendi. A special journey through art history!

Wax Upon a Time Sculptures from the Medici collections

Exhibitions

The exhibition showcases around 90 works from the collections of the Uffizi, Palazzo Pitti, and other museums, including a rich selection of waxworks, paintings, sculptures, cameos, and works in semi-precious stones, many of which were originally displayed in the Tribuna but were removed from the collections in the late 18th century.

An entire room will be dedicated to the great waxwork master, Gaetano Giulio Zumbo, featuring a recent acquisition by the Galleries: La Corruzione dei Corpi (The Corruption of Bodies), an extraordinary piece that embodies the Baroque intensity with which the artist explored the themes of life and death.

With Cera una volta, the Uffizi brings back to the public a forgotten chapter of Italian sculpture, in which wax — the quintessentially ephemeral material — becomes a symbol of time, beauty, and memory.
