February in Florence: what to do in the city and its surroundings

Events, romance, and traditions for those visiting Florence and its surroundings.

Local traditions in February

On February 17, in the evocative setting of Piazza Santa Croce, Florence renews its annual reenactment of the famous Partita dell’Assedio (Match of the Siege), the epic game of historic football played in 1530 during the siege of the city. A highly symbolic event that embodies the proud and indomitable spirit of the Florentines.

The following day, February 18, Florence pays tribute to Anna Maria Luisa de’ Medici, the Electress Palatine, on the anniversary of her death. She is remembered for a gesture that proved fundamental to the city’s history: permanently binding the extraordinary Medici collections to Florence. The commemoration is marked by the procession of the Historic Parade of the Florentine Republic, which brings the costumes and atmospheres of the past back to life, often with reenactments held inside the halls of Palazzo Vecchio.
