OF BOXES AND CEILINGS – 180 posters for the city. Public art against gender stereotypes and violence in relationships is an artistic research project promoted by the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, the lead organisation of the national PRIN AFAM 2024 network, which brings together the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome, the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts in Genoa and the Academy of Fine Arts in Frosinone.

The works, created by students from the partner academies and selected by a special committee, will be displayed on the council’s billboard network and on large 6m×3m billboards, as well as on digital signage screens located at the city’s main entry points.

A public art campaign that invites the public to reflect on gender stereotypes, youth distress, the construction of identity and the ways in which bonds between individuals are formed, whilst examining the forms of violence that are rooted in deeply ingrained social representations.

The exhibition marks the start of a programme that will continue over the coming months with seminars, workshops, study days, meetings and performance pieces taking place across the Metropolitan City of Florence and at the venues of the partner academies.
